My name is Lisa and I am currently sitting in the domestic departure terminal in Sydney, waiting for my flight to Hobart, Tasmania where I will be spending my semester abroad.
Tasmania may seem like quite an unusual place for an exchange, but compared to many, my background is quite unusual too. Being half English and half Swedish, I have had the pleasure of living in both my 'home countries' for 8 and 5 years respectively. My parents have always been quite adventurous so, when I was 8 years old, we packed up our house and moved from England to Botswana, Africa which, after 8 years I also consider one of my homes.
I knew when I applied for exchange that I wanted to travel far from Sweden, so the University of Tasmania seemed like a perfect choice. The nature and the landscape is totally different from anything that I've experienced before and, though I may be arriving during their winter season, the days will eventually get longer, lighter and warmer (a HUGE bonus in my opinion- I'm not too keen on the dark Swedish winters).
The university provides a variety of courses to pick and choose from, so myself and Linn (who will join me in Tasmania) have chosen courses in Global Political Ecology, Conserving Nature and Environments, Australian Environmental History and Environmental Management (which we later changed to Introduction to Marine and Antarctic Science). Unlike Sweden, all these courses run parallel to one another, so it should be interesting to experience a new way of learning.
Having been part of the mentor program for international students back in Lund, I have heard wonderful things about going on exchange. I am so excited to meet people from all walks of life as well as explore more of Australia.
