Hello everyone
So, this will have to be a try out from my part. I’m studying in the University of Tasmania this semester and I’m in Hobart. Lovely place. I feel right at home. Everyone here are so happy and friendly, they might give their babies some sort of life-elixir here!
The landscape is fantastic as well as the surroundings in town, cute small houses and the hills just makes Hobart and Tasmania a place to like.
So far I’ve only been here 1,5 weeks, but so much has already happened. I’ve meet so many people, UTAS arrange a lot of activities, orientation in school & so on. Not to forget: School started this week!
The lecturers seem really enthusiastic & committed about their work and are really inspiring. After the first four days in school I have not doubts in my mind about where to apply for a master spot. On the other hand, there are a lot of nice places apart from Hobart to go to the next time.
The units in which I’m enrolled:
· Australian Environmental history
· Conservation of Nature in Landscapes
· Global Political Ecology
· Introduction to Marine and Antarctic Studies
The people here has an environmental mind set which I like a lot and it’s easy for me as a vegetarian who tries to avid dairy product to find good fresh food, which is off course organically produced J This makes me really happy.
The UniGym here is also very nice, so I’ll just have to spend some time there, also since there are a few nice competitions coming up! For example: http://www.rawchallenge.com.au/event/tasmania-october-2014
Except from checking out the university area and central Hobart I’ve been to Richmond, Bonorong and Lake Saint Claire so far. Richmond is a very old cute little town, Bonorong is a wildlife sanctuary where they take care of injured wild animals like Tasmanian devils, kangaroos, wombats, birds, snakes…… Lake St. Clair is the deepest lake in Tasmania and is the beginning of river Derwent which has it’s outlet in Hobart.
No, I haven’t seen thousands of deadly spiders and snakes, I’ve seen 1 spider so far, on the street. I live up on Mount Nelson so I get to see a lot of wallabies and possums, which crowds the place. (And I get a lot of exercise just by walking home).
I only have one complaint, the poorly insulated houses are making me cold at all times L It doesn’t seem to bother the Tassies though, they wear shorts & say all their short words they use for everything. (afternoon = arvo, breakfast = breakie, invitation = gernsie…)
Since I came here everyone seems to be asking me why Hobart/Tasmania… I feel like if you want to experience physical geography IRL this is definitely one of the places to do so!
